No Strings Attached is a romantic comedy that, once it finds it’s footing, weaves a fun story of two friends who attempt to be little more than passing ships in the night. Though the film struggles a little in the beginning to find it’s balance between crude humour and genuine rom-com, it does eventually pull through.
Portman and Kutcher have excellent chemistry and it is a genuine pleasure to see them sharing the screen together. Portman, fresh from her Oscar-winning performance in Black Swan, is beautiful and proves once again that her comedic abilities are just as impressive and convincing as her dramatic portrayals.
With the exception of last years Valentines Day we haven’t seen much of the Hollywood mogul that is Ashton Kutcher, busy with Katalyst (his production company) responsibilities it was nice to see him in this light romantic comedy. He isn’t the world’s most gifted actor but he knows and sticks with his strengths.
There was a sub-plot involving the leads best friends that Helen and I would have like to have seen get more screen time. As it is you can see that they are one of the cutest (and by far the most stable) couples in the film. This is a fun film that has a well measured balance of romance and comedy. I give it {{{3.5 out of 5}}}

I like a good romantic comedy and luckily No Strings Attached is just that! Ivan Reitman is an old hat at comedy, having directed such films as Kindergarten Cop, Twins, Junior (he apprently loves Arnie), Up in the Air, and most importantly – the Ghost Busters series. As a side note he also directed one of my favourite rom-coms of all time – Dave, which you must go and rent now if you haven’t seen because it will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Like James I was also peased to see more of Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. They both have great comic timing and together create a perfect rom-com chemistry as childhood friends turned sex buddies. I was also pleased to see Kevin Kline in something, having not seen him anywhere for a while. However I felt that his character was a little bit unecessary in the end and felt like he was put in as a gimmick rather than as a catalyst for character development as the producers would have us believe.
All in all I fund this film enjoyable with some very cute and memorable moments. It doesn’t necessarily need to be watched at the cinema but when it is out on DVD I recommend this film with a glass of wine and a group of friends. I give this film {{{3.5 out of 5}}}
